The Best Times and Content to Post on Social Media

Facebook

Best content to post:

Almost anything is fair game on Facebook. When it comes to the most popular content, however, quizzes, personal stories and entertainment news take the cake. Facebook is a platform on which you engage with those you know, such as friends, family, acquaintances, etc. It’s not surprising, therefore, that sharing more personal content — quizzes, stories about life and love, etc. — is so popular among users. If your friend has a baby or just graduated from college, for example, you’d find it on Facebook.

The best days to post are on Thursdays and Fridays, as engagement and the “Happiness Index” reach high points on these days. Mondays and Wednesdays, on the contrary, see lower engagement. 6-8 AM and 2-5PM are the highest peak traction times, as noted in Adweek.

Twitter

Best content to post:

Business and breaking news are most popular on Twitter. If something important is happening in the world, you’ll find it first on this site. The timely fashion in which people can gather info is definitely Twitter’s greatest strength — that and, of course, the ability to see the thoughts of celebrities. When Taylor Swift releases a new song or is traveling somewhere specific, look to Twitter.

Best time to post:

On Twitter, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday are the best times to post for regular folks. Businesses, on the contrary, are best off posting during the weekdays. Around 5 p.m. is a peak time for retweets, while noon and 6 p.m. are best for general engagement.

LinkedIn

Best content to post:

LinkedIn users expect to find a variety of industry news, so that’s what attracts viewers. People turn to the other social media platforms for other types of news; LinkedIn is the strictly professional outlet of social media. Want to find out how to ace an interview? Look to LinkedIn.

Best time to post:

Because the site concentrates on professional/industry happenings, the best times to post are on weekdays during work hours. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are optimal.

Pinterest

Best content to post:

The crafty side of social media, Pinterest does best in the areas of food, fashion and DIY crafts. Have a recipe you’ve been dying to share with the world? Pinterest would be your ideal social media candidate.

Best time to post:

People wanting to craft and cook seem to flock to Pinterest on Saturdays, when they have extra time on their hands. Prime hours are from 2-4 p.m. and between 8-11 p.m. Posts about fashion and retail peak on Fridays at 3 p.m.

Google+

Best content to post:

Google+ shares the wealth, offering deals and coupons to users. Other popular content found on the site includes celebrity news and sports articles. If you want to know more about a football player being accused of a crime, for example, Google+ probably has the scoop.

Best time to post:

Much of the traffic on Google+ is business-related, making weekdays the best days to post, specifically in the 9-11 a.m. window.

Instagram

Best content to post:

Instagram users appreciate aesthetics. The entire platform is built on appearances, on graphics, leaving beautiful things in the lead. Speaking specifically, celebrities, food and animals are very popular.

Best time to post:

Monday sees a peak in Instagram engagement. Throughout the week, the heaviest Instagram traffic occurs in the off-work evening hours, although there is a general dip on Sundays.

  • Wonderful article Jesse! Whilst I’ve read a number of these time-post related articles it always makes me curious if the times can vary on the industry and type of business that is posting the content. Do you think there’s any movement or differentiation when it comes to this?
