These are 11 social media quotes that have truly shifted the way I think about social media, and communication in general.
I created the 50 Inspiring Quotes from 50 Top Social Media Power Influencers a few months ago and it performed really well! This time I’m sourcing the quotes from a variety of personas, some related to the social media world and others that deviate from what you may be expecting – gotta keep things ingesting right?
I’m not motivated to entertain people through Twitter, so just by having Twitter and not saying anything, I make people mad.
You may be thinking, “Well, this isn’t really useful.” I started off with this quote to show the social media irony in it. Louis C.K has conformed to a tweeting routine – he’s even done an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit. He’s mimed Conan’s follower strategy of just following 1 person and he understands the power of a great CTA.
Even though many of us refuse to jump into new social media platforms, whether it’s Google Plus, Pinterest, or Reddit, eventually we’ll come to consider them. This shows just how powerful social media has become.
Does Louis C.K. need to tweet? No.
Is it a smart move in terms of exposure for upcoming shows, appealing to fans, and for the sheer convenience? Absolutely.
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.
When we repeat or regurgitate social media content, our results remain unchanged. I really like this quote because it doesn’t have to be viewed as, “you must always change” – it can also be seen as, “if you’re pleased with the results you’re getting, then keep doing what you’re doing.”
If things seem under control, you are just not going fast enough.
There is a subtle “madness” to this quote, and I think it’s extremely relevant to social media. I don’t think slamming the gas pedal is the appropriate response to “control” but I think crafting strategies, such as competitor analysis and consumer research should always be running.
Even a top seo company must stay agile and flexible enough to outperform competitors on social media.
Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.
While it’s taken me awhile to appreciate a quote from Oprah, especially one that has her “Own it” tagline, I must give credit where credit is due.
Oprah is essentially suggesting testing your limits.
And in the realm of social media, how can be sure if something like an infographic campaign will work if you don’t give it a shot?
I’m a person who gets better with practice. Getting older is awesome – because you get more practice.
This parallels the trials and tribulations of social media.
The more we practice “awesome” social media, the better we get, simple.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
In the same vein of Oprah’s quote, Mr. Roosevelt suggests we step outside our cage of fear and find out if those social media “best practices” are in fact, best practice.
Cleveland fans are awesome.
Haha, alright, allow me to explain my thoughts on including this one.
On social media, fans are literally our life-force. Without them, we’re simply preaching to an empty room.
We need to recognize fans and connect with them – wherever our social media reaches. If we respond to as many comments, emails, and call-outs as possible, some fans will transform into superfans, essentially promoting us, for us.
In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.
And here is Mr. Cosby, showing us just how to overcome the fear mentioned in Oprah and Mr. Roosevelt.
If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to help them build theirs.
Social media offers so much potential – we know this. We brainstorm ideas that could possibly “go viral” and garner thousands of shares, drive sales, and boost brand recognition.
But if we don’t work towards turning these ideas into a reality, someone else will.
The recovery center, 12 Keys Rehab, has actually reaped the social capital with an awesome social media campaign. It starts with their blog content, which is made up of infographics and videographics that are compelling, and ultimately get shared hundreds – if not thousands of times.
Think big and don’t listen to people who tell you it can’t be done. Life’s too short to think small.
My only qualm with this quote is that many times people who “think big” end up setting aside rationale and smaller elements that make up a successful and effective idea.
Then again, if it wasn’t for people with this mindset, things like a motion sensor water sprinkler or 3D printers would have never been conceived.
Distracted from distraction by distraction
I felt this quote was best suited to the social media world, and here’s why:
Have you ever reached the “weird place” of YouTube? It occurs when you keep clicking on related videos, inevitably ending up watching something so different from what you had started with, it can only be described as weird. Or when you scroll endlessly through the social media streams of Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit – only to realize hours have passed since your first click.
This is because social media is naturally distracting.
The whole basis for creating social media is to distract people from whatever their initial goal was. Even if your basis is philanthropic or aims to “change the world” you’re still creating something that needs to distract people; otherwise, who will see it?
