I have a limited budget that I’m planning on spending on social media advertising for my ecommerce site. I know a good amount about link building but my market is way too congested for links to get me organic traffic. Should I still save some budget for links or just go full on ads?

At the very least, you should focus on traffic links. That means getting listed in relevant directories for the automotive category.

If you want to shoot for free links, try creating exclusive discounts for legit auto-news sites/communities. This is a solid way to get “free” links and more importantly, conversions.

I would say SMA is a smart move for your situation, but don’t shut down link building completely. There should be a balance. Also make sure your internal links are up to the 3-deep rule: every page should be at least 3 clicks away from any other page. We’re talking about this in another topic too.

Thanks, I didn’t know about that 3-deep rule. Some products are listed 5 or 6 deep, but it would be a lot of work to re-categorize everything at this point. I’m pushing 2k+ (affiliate) products and it’s just too much to individually build links. Some of my highest ROI products might be worth it, but it’s a very congested space. Social media ads are pretty untapped though so that’s what makes it more attractive than say, $xxx.xx on Y links.

I see. If it’s not in your budget I would still consider pushing for links on relevant distributor sites.

Here’s a tactic that mixes social media ads & link building:

    – Create a discount for your site: 27% off first purchase.
    – Make the discount “unlockable” by having your social media ad direct to a landing page optimized for this unlockable discount.
    – To unlock the discount, a user must share or link to the page.
